Whoopi: ‘I Got Somethin’ To Tell You’
Whoopi Goldberg has dabbled in everything from comedy to acting, talk show hosting to singing and now her newest career endeavor is apparently being a film director.
Goldberg debuted her documentary,I Got Somethin’ To Tell Youat the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival last week. The film tells the story of Moms Mabley, the African-American, openly gay, stand-up comic.
Mabley made a name for herself in comedy by pushing the boundaries of race and politics in the 1920s. According to theHuffington Post, she came out in her early 20s and often used her sexuality in her skits.
Mabley had a very successful career, appearing on shows likeEd Sullivanand performing at the White House. However, some would suggest she has since been forgotten and Goldberg wanted to bring the legend back to life.
Goldberg, who portrayed the comedian in a one-woman show early in her career, focused the documentary on Mabley’s comedy skits because much of her personal life is unknown.
If you didn’t make it to the film festival, you can catch the documentary later this year on HBO.
