Wallpaper: principles of choice, the rules of sticking
The choice of finishing materials for the walls is very diverse - decorative plaster, paint, vinyl and ceramic tiles. But the first place in popularity is still occupied by wallpapers, which can be purchased here -. This material attracts not only a variety of textures and colors, but also high consumer qualities. There are types of wallpaper that can be repainted up to eight times, there are also varieties that are resistant to abrasion and moisture.
Depending on the material from which the base is made, all types of wallpaper can be divided into the following groups - paper, non-woven, glass wallpaper. For the manufacture of the first two varieties, wood pulp is used. But in non-woven wallpaper, synthetic fibers (polyester, viscose) are added to the cellulose, which give the material high strength and prevent deformation when gluing.
Glass fiber is a fabric woven from thin glass filaments. This material is fire safe (does not burn and does not sustain combustion), as well as highly resistant to chemical and mechanical stress. Glass fiber can be cleaned of contamination with water or household detergents.
The aesthetic and operational qualities of wallpaper are largely dependent on the type and method of applying a decorative layer. Therefore, before you decide what to choose the wallpaper for a particular room, you need to familiarize yourself with their basic properties.
Paper painted wallpaper. The decorative layer is applied typographically with paint. Paper wallpaper can be monophonic, decorated with abstract ornaments or thematic images. A large variety of decors allows you to choose the right finish for any room. The disadvantages of paper wallpaper can be attributed to low resistance to ultraviolet radiation. After a few years of operation, the paint will fade.
Vinyl wallpapers. This paper or non-woven wallpaper with PVC coating. In the production process, special components are added to the vinyl mass, due to which pores are formed in the decorative polymer layer. Therefore, vinyl wallpapers have the ability to "breathe" - to pass air and moisture.A layer of polyvinyl chloride can be embossed - imitate the texture of leather, wood, fabric weaving, decorative plaster. The service life of vinyl wallpaper in residential areas is about 30 years. The material during this time is not deformed and does not fade in the sun.
Velor wallpaper. The decorative surface of this wallpaper consists of finely chopped threads and in its texture resembles velvet. This material is very difficult to glue and care. If when sticking a drop of glue falls on the front side, it will be impossible to wipe it off. Pollution from velor wallpaper removed with a vacuum cleaner, set to the minimum suction power.
Wallpaper for painting. A large group of wallpaper from non-woven and fiberglass with embossed patterns on the surface. It can be a regular fabric weave texture, jacquard patterns, floral and geometric patterns. For painting, it is desirable to use thin acrylic or acrylic paint. With subsequent repairs such wallpaper is not necessary to remove from the walls - they can simply be repainted in a different color.
Vegetable wallpaper. The use of environmentally friendly materials in the arrangement of housing - one of the fashion trends. Manufacturers of wallpaper created collections with decorative coatings from herbal materials. On the non-woven or paper base are mounted reed lamellae, palm, rattan, jute fibers, stems of various herbs. Before glueing wallpapers with plant cover, they should be kept for at least 24 hours in the room where they will be glued, so that natural materials adapt to the microclimate of the room.
Textile wallpaper. On the basis of paper or non-woven coated decorative textile layer. It can be natural and artificial fabrics (linen, silk, cotton, acetate silk, viscose). In the so-called yarn wallpaper decorative coating is made from individual yarns pasted vertically along the length of the cloth. When sticking yarn wallpaper seams between the panels are almost invisible - it creates the effect of a continuous seamless coating. In models with fabric coatings, the seams between the panels are read quite clearly. Manufacturers have developed a collection of fabric wide width (up to 3 m) to reduce the number of joints between the seams.
Basic rules for wallpapering
The appearance of the finished room will largely depend on how well the wallpaper is glued. The deviation of the panels from the vertical, visible joints between the canvases, traces of glue on the front surface can completely spoil the impression of the interior. In order for the glued wallpaper to look perfect, it is necessary to properly prepare the surface of the walls, mark the panels, follow the manufacturer's recommendations on the choice of glue, the method of applying it, etc.
If old wallpaper is stuck on the walls, they must be removed completely, carefully cleaning the base of paper residues. There are several ways to remove the wallpaper from the walls. You can moisten the surface with water using a conventional spray gun or sponge, and after 15-20 minutes, clean off the soaked cloth with a spatula.
The use of domestic steam cleaner significantly speed up the process of removing the wallpaper. Hot steam cloths will be removed almost effortlessly. The steam cleaner will help to cope even with wallpaper, glued with PVA, bustilat and other non-specialized adhesives. After dismantling the decorative coating, the walls (if necessary) level, smear cracks, grind and coat with primer.
A roll of wallpaper is cut into sheets at the height of the room. Before sticking the first panel on the wall (using a level or plumb line) they beat off a vertical line. On it orient the long edge of the cloth. If glue has fallen on the front side of the wallpaper, it should be wet quickly (without rubbing) with a damp sponge.
If the owner of the apartment decided to glue the wallpaper on his own, but does not have sufficient skills, then in this case it is worthwhile to opt for paper wallpaper of standard width. Even if in the process of gluing the flaws are allowed, they can easily be fixed by replacing the damaged cloth with a new one. This will not entail significant financial expenses. But to work with non-standard types of wallpaper (fabric, vegetable, velor), you need to invite professionals with experience with this type of finish. Happy repair!
