Sounders Women Defeated by 0-3 LA Blues
The reigning W-League champions, LA Blues demonstrated their strength with a 3-0 victory over the Sounders Women on Sunday afternoon. The Blues controlled the match with extended possession and wore down the Sounders in their second match of the weekend road trip in Los Angeles.
Former professional, Mele French scored once in the 16thminute and another midway through the 2ndhalf. The two goal lead looked comfortable enough but a third was added by Katie Stengel in the 88thminute to cap of the Blues victory.
Scoring began in the 16thminute when Mele French got on the end of a short through ball inside the penalty box. The veteran turned the ball against her body with a quick shot to the far post past Anna Picarelli for the goal.
The Sounders battled throughout the 1sthalf to keep the margin manageable for the 2ndperiod. They managed a few dangerous through balls and crosses but didn’t challenge the Blues goalkeeper.
The Sounders started much better in the 2ndhalf, winning 50/50 challenges and showing a more confident demeanor. That mindset nearly equalized the match when Ifeoma Onomunu earned some space at the top of the box and found Lyndsey Patterson. The Puyallup native shifted her weight before shooting but the ball sailed high. Onomunu would develop a few more chances before the day ended she was often alone and no goals came from the effort.
In the 63rdminute it was French who put the match out of reach. A nice play down the left side from Jamie Bell allowed her space to slide a ball into the near post. French beat the Sounders defense to the near post and poked it in. Picarelli got a touch but couldn’t stop the shot from her former teammate.
Two minutes before the end of the match, an extra goal was added to the total by Katie Stengel. The 2013 Blues hero in the playoffs deserved a goal from her efforts and she was able to finish another Jamie Bell cross.
The Sounders Women finish the road trip with one win and one loss for 3pts on the season. The Pali Blues now have 9pts after defeating Sedona FC 9-0 and 7-0 in their first two games of the year.
The Sounders will head on the road again next weekend for one match against the Sedona FC Strikers. Information on the teams can be found on SoundersWomen.com. Also, follow the team on their road trip via social media @SoundersWomen on Twitter and Facebook.
