Russian clubs in European competition in 2018-2019
According to the results of previous seasons, in 2018, the Russian Football Premier League (RFPL) ranked sixth in the UEFA coefficients table. Due to this circumstance, 6 Russian clubs will take part in the European Cup 2018/2019.
Who will represent Russia
The representation of Russia in European competitions in the 2018/2019 season increased by one team compared to the previous season. Thus, the first three teams of the Premier League get into the UEFA Champions League, and the fourth and fifth teams, as well as the winner of the Russian Football Cup, get a ticket to the UEFA Europa League.
UEFA Champions League
For the first time since the European football season, the Russian Premier League won three passes to the most prestigious European club tournament. Lokomotiv, CSKA and Spartak got this opportunity.
The Moscow club, 12 years later, once again becoming the champion of Russia in football, received the long-awaited opportunity to represent Russia in the European Cup 2018/2019.The status of the winner of the national championship allowed the "railroad" not to participate in the qualifying round of the tournament, qualifying directly in the group stage, the composition of which will be held on August 30. It should be noted that Lokomotiv is in the first basket designed for the draw, along with such giants of world football as Bayern, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Manchester City - champions of Germany , Spain, France and England respectively.
Despite a bad start following the results of the first three rounds, in which Loko played a draw twice and lost one time without scoring a single goal in these games, the Moscow team acquired several new players:
- The defense of the “railroad workers” was reinforced by Nigerian with a Russian passport, Brian Idova, transferred from the disbanded “Amkar” and the German Benedikt Khevedes, who played all 120 minutes of the 2014 World Cup victory for Germany’s national team.
- In PSG was rented with the right of redemption Polish midfielder Grzegorz Krychovyak.
- In the Lokomotiv attack, Fyodor Smolov will now play - a participant in the recently held World Championships in the Russian team.
- From “Rubin” the pupil of “Loko” Rifat Zhemaletdinov returned, and the Portuguese Eder was finally redeemed from the French “Lille”.
“Red-Blue” last season took second place in the RFPL, thanks to which they also qualified directly to the group stage of the Champions League. The basket for the draw in which the representative of Moscow will appear will be determined immediately after the end of the qualifying round, however, given the CSKA club rating (45,000 points), there is reason to believe that the army team will be ranked third.
In the current offseason, “CSKA” suffered heavy losses. Sergey Ignashevich and the Berezutsky brothers, who were the main defenders of the club for many years, completed their careers. Also left the club is one of the main stars of Russian football - Alexander Golovin, sold in Monaco for a record 30,000,000 euros for the RFPL. To replace this and some other players with the club were acquired:
- Icelandic defender Herdur Magnusson;
- Brazilian Rodrigo Bekao, rented from Bayi;
- Slovenian midfielder Jaka Bijol;
- Croatian Nikola Vlašić, rented from Everton;
- Uruguayan striker Abel Hernandez.
The “national team”, which finished third in the last season, began its way in the European football cup 2018/2019 with the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The club from Moscow on the basis of two matches gave way to the Greek PAOK with a total score of 3-2, and the return game at Otkrytie Arena ended in a draw, in connection with which the “red-whites” got into the UEFA Europa League group stage.
Of the newcomers of the team, we should mention the Frenchman Samuel Zhigot, who distinguished himself in the first round of the RFPL, Roman Eremenko and Ivelin Popov, who spent the second half of last season in Rubin Kazan.
Three Russian teams will take part in the current draw of the Europa League: Krasnodar, Zenit and Ufa.
The Sergey Galitsky Club has become the only Russian club in the European Cup 2018/2019, starting from the group stage of the Europa League. This became possible due to the non-admission to the European Cups of the now-disbanded winner of the Russian Cup 2017/2018 - “Tosno”. According to the results of the qualification, the Kuban team can appear both in the first and in the second basket.
The main news related to Krasnodar was the dismissal of Igor Shalimov.Place the coach of the club at the moment is vacant. Of the players who have strengthened the club, it should be noted Uros Space and Ari who returned from a one-year lease at Lokomotiv.
Going in first place in the championship of Russia under the leadership of Sergei Semak Petersburg club unsuccessfully began performing on the European stage. In the first match of the third qualifying round of the Europa League, Zenit lost to Dinamo Minsk with a score of 4-0. However, St. Petersburgers still managed to get into the playoff round, defeating the Belarusian club at home with a record score of 8-1. Artem Dziuba scored with a hat-trick, and Robert Mac designed a double. Also for the “Zenith” in this match scored Noboa, Paredes and Driussi.
In the next round, Zenit will play on August 23 and 30 with the Norwegian Molde.
Petersburg club in this transfer window has not yet marked acquisitions. However, those returning from the lease Dziuba, Mack and Noboa are already actively playing at the core of the team.
In the European Cup debut season, the club from the capital of Bashkiria reached the UEFA Europa League play-off round, where they will play on the same days as Zenit with the Rangers from Glasgow.Before that, “Ufa” won the Slovenian “Domzale” according to the rule of the guest goal (the total score of two matches - 1-1) and the Luxembourg “Progress Niderkorn” 4-3.
A few words should be said about the Tosno club from the city of the same name in the Leningrad Region. Having won the Russian Cup, this team was unable to pass licensing according to UEFA rules due to financial problems, after which it left the Russian Premier League. June 9 bankruptcy and disbandment of the team was announced.
The finalist of the Russian Cup 2017/2018 - Kursk Avangard - was also unable to obtain a UEFA license, in connection with which a final list of clubs representing Russia on the European football arena was formed.
