How to remove the fungusIf the house has increased humidity or poor ventilation, then sooner or later the question will arise about how to remove the unpleasant smell and remove the fungus. The characteristic dark spots of mold (fungus) appear most often in the kitchen, in the bathroom and in the joints of the outer plates. In the room there is the smell of mold, which is very similar to the smell of rot. You can remove the smell from the apartment with the help of special effective means that you will find on the profile page. For a radical solution of the problem, it is necessary to revise the approaches to the ventilation of these premises and their repair.

To prevent the appearance of fungus, all repairs should be carried out only during the warm period of the year and in dry weather, and the treated surfaces should also be thoroughly dried with a fan heater or a special building dryer.

Among the means to combat mold, offered in the store, most often offer air dryers, but to use them before the cause of excessive moisture is eliminated and the fungus itself is not advisable. The reasons for the appearance of the fungus in many cases is poor ventilation or high humidity - that’s what we should start with.

Many people think that the fungus is not so scary, but in addition to the damage to building materials and untidy appearance, it is harmful to human health. The fungus can cause the following diseases:

  • Allergies of various kinds, and irritation can occur on the fungus itself and on other substances. Allergic rhinitis, asthma, etc. may occur.
  • Mycoses (direct infection with a fungus) - these may be candidiasis, aspergillosis, etc.
  • The development of malignant tumors and leukemias is also possible due to the carcinogenic action of the fungus.
  • Superinfections - due to the weakening of the body by fungi, immunity becomes weakened and therefore other infections appear - viral and bacterial in nature.

The causes of the fungus

Under special conditions, the fungus can begin to actively develop and will soon hit large areas. Here are the reasons favorable for the development of the fungus:

  • No direct sunlight
  • High humidity
  • Special temperature conditions (approximately 20 degrees Celsius)
  • Poor ventilation work or lack thereof.

How to eliminate the fungus

how to get the fungus on the wallsFor a complete and final victory over the fungus, you must perform a number of activities. Start by identifying the cause. Most often it is wet walls or poor ventilation. The situation with air circulation can be corrected by installing an additional or more powerful fan or by cleaning the ventilation corridor. But to remove the fungus from the walls a little more difficult.

Previously used such time-tested methods as whitewashing surfaces using office glue and copper sulfate, but now there are much more effective methods.

Now the technology of removing the fungus looks briefly like this:

  1. Identification and elimination of the cause of the penetration of excess moisture and restoration of the insulating layer in this place
  2. Thoroughly dry the infected area to prevent the spread of spores.
  3. Removal of the fungus and the prevention of its subsequent appearance.

If the first paragraph is more or less clear, then we’ll dwell on the second and third points in more detail.

    • First, the place on the wall affected by the fungus is cleaned of plaster or remove all coatings - wallpaper, fabric, wood panels, etc.The fungus spreads particularly well in plaster - it penetrates its layer with thin threads of its mycelium and destroys the coating material. That is why the plaster from the walls must be removed completely, even if seemingly the surface is not damaged. It is necessary to clean the surfaces to concrete and even to clean the loose layer of the base of the wall with a metal spatula or a hard wire brush. The fact is that the fungus tends to infect not only plastered surfaces, but also the base itself. And if you only clean the wall covering, its surface, then in the future the mold will appear again, and it will be even harder to remove it. Struck plaster and other materials become loose and scrape off very easily.
You can also treat the walls with a special compound to remove residual cement and plaster. This will remove the remnants of the contaminated cement mortar, and will release the pores of the brick or panels for further processing by special structures.
    • The next step is to thoroughly dry the surfaces. There are several methods of doing this work, but it is safest to treat the affected areas or even the entire wall with a blowtorch. This will not only dry the surface, but also destroy the spores of the fungus. The more thoroughly the surface is dried and decontaminated, the less chance the fungus will appear again.

  • Next, the walls are treated with special antifungal compounds or other agents that destroy mold, for example, with 10% copper sulfate solution or formalin solution (0.25 liters of 40% formalin diluted with 10 liters of water). You can also purchase special formulations for fungus removal in stores. Usually they are diluted in water in the proportions indicated on the label of the product, and then applied to the walls with a roller or brush. These means are applied not only to the places affected by the fungus, but also to the rest of the wall. By the way, besides the fungus, antiseptics also successfully fight lichens, mosses, various algae and other pathogens of the bacterial type.
  • In addition to the funds from the fungus, an antiseptic primer is also applied to the walls, which removes dust from the surfaces and improves adhesion of the walls to plaster or cement mortar. Also, the walls are treated with a waterproofing compound that prevents the appearance of mold or mildew on the plaster.
  • Then the wall is treated with a suitable primer and covered with a layer of plaster. From above, you can apply another heat-insulating paint, and then pierce the wall and once again cover it with universal primer. Only after that you can proceed to the further covering of the walls with a finishing material - gluing wallpaper, applying decorative plaster or painting. It should be remembered that all layers applied to the wall must be thoroughly dried.
