How to drill a glass?
Sometimes there is a need to make a smallhole in the glass surface. This is quite a painstaking work, which must be done with care, accuracy. To get it right and it is desirable from the first time, you need to choose the right way. Let's look at the options for drilling a glass.
Methods of drilling glass
Drilling glass with pre-hardening
Make a hole will help you most simplyA drill, which must first be hardened. We harden the tip of the drill and immediately press it into the sealing wax, where we hold it until the sealing wax ceases to melt. During the drilling process, the tip of the drill needs to be moistened with turpentine. If you have a small glass object, in which you need to make a hole, you can drill directly into the water.
Drilling glass using copper wire
If this method does not suit you or is at handthere was no drill, then you can use a piece of copper wire. Before you drill a hole in the glass, you need to make a paste. To do this, mix camphor, turpentine and large emery. Take 1 part camphor, add 2 parts turpentine and 4 parts emery, mix well. Prepared the paste applied to the place where you want to make a hole. Now take the drill, insert the copper wire into the socket and start drilling. It is also very convenient to drill a hole directly through a plywood that has guide holes.
Note that during drilling, glass should lie on a flat and fairly hard surface. Do not press very hard on the glass, otherwise it may burst, and this will happen at the most inappropriate and unexpected moment for you. Prepare that drilling one hole can take quite a long time. But it's better not to hurry and make a hole from the first time, than then to remake everything and start again.
Drilling a large hole
All of the above will help you, if you wantto make a small hole. Now let's look at how to drill a glass in such a way that the hole is large. If you want to get a hole in a thick glass with a diameter of more than 4 mm, then it is best to use a copper pipe, which is clamped in the chuck of the drilling machine. Note that the diameter of the selected pipe should be less than the diameter of the hole. On the glass it is necessary to make a fence around the desired hole from putty or plasticine. Inside the made ring we pour corundum powder, made from a crushed emery circle. Fill with water powder to get a liquid slurry. Now you can drill.
You can also make a hole withmelted solder. To do this, we process the glass surface with acetone or alcohol. We make a small hill of moist river sand, in which we make a conical groove with a sharp stick and clean the area of the sand equal to the desired hole. In the resulting form of sand pour molten solder temperature of about 300 degrees. When the solder cools, remove the sand and remove the cone of solder with the piece of glass adhering to it.
